Diet Pills

With the FDA approval of diet pills being difficult to pass at times, the instances of doctors prescribing medications which have been approved for other illnesses and physical problems to people who want to lose weight is on the rise.

With medical studies proving that many medications offer weight loss as a side effect, the possibilities of using some of those other medications for weight loss and dieting purposes have taken a swing. Some of the medicines that have been recently discovered to cause weight loss are now being suggested as diet pills to some patients who want to lose weight.

One common medication that has been found to cause weight loss is Bupropion, a medicine that is normally prescribed for depression. With the most common side effects being dry mouth and insomnia, this is one drug that doctors have begun suggesting for weight loss.

Other medications that have become popular for doctors who want to help their patients lose weight are the seizure medicines Topiramate and Zonisamide. With relatively mild side effects, the prescription rates for these have risen due to their usefulness in weight loss.

Metformin, a diabetes drug, has also become a weight loss drug. With side effects that include weakness, dizziness, and nausea, the amount of doctors prescribing it for weight loss has increased. This medicine, along with others which are prescribed for weight loss rather than for their intended uses, is usually prescribed for a short period of time, as are most of the diet pills that doctors suggest to their patients.

Another drug which has been noticed to cause weight loss in people is Vigabatrin, a drug that has been used to treat drug addiction in people who are addicted to cocaine and methamphetamines. Though the tests done so far suggest that it might be useful in treating obesity, the consideration that obesity is caused by addiction is also being considered in testing.

When a doctor prescribes a medication for a condition other than what it has been FDA approved for, it is called “prescribing off label.” This is legal to do and has made it possible for medications to be useful for more than what they were meant for originally.

As medical studies show more medications that may be approved for weight loss, the possibilities of seeing more and more dieters use other prescription medications for weight loss will decrease. With the increase in available diet pills, the lack of issues regarding side effects of other medications, and the possibilities of diet pills being prescribed for longer periods of time, the field of weight loss research will make the advances that they have been waiting for.

Obesity sufferers will be given the help needed to overcome their plight with the increase in diet pill availability and the new diet pills that will be able to be used for longer periods of time. The advances made so far in the weight loss field are promising, and new ways to use old drugs as well as finding new drugs for weight loss will allow those dieting promises to become reality.

Through up-and-coming weight loss methods, medications, and programs, our country’s obesity rate will soon be at a minimum, and it could possibly a problem of the past for millions of people.
